Massage Modalities

These are the modalities, or kinds of massage, offered at Lotus Massage and Spa:

Swedish Massage

Swedish massage incorporates the use of hands, palms, forearms, and elbows, as well as both active and passive movements, to manipulate the superficial layers of muscle tissue. This is what most clients refer to as "a relaxing massage".

Deep Tissue Massage

Deep tissue massage works to realign deeper layers of muscle and connective tissue, such as tendons and ligaments. It focuses on breaking up adhesions (commonly referred to as "knots") that can block circulation and cause pain, inflammation, and limited range of motion.

Hot Stone Massage

Hot Stone Massage involves the use of smooth, heated stones during your massage. First the therapist does quick warm-up of the muscle tissue with their hands, then the stones are used. They are used in two ways: 1- In the therapists' hand to actually massage you and 2- they are placed on specific areas of the body. The localized heat and weight of the stones works to relax muscles and allow the therapist to potentially work more deeply into the layers of muscle tissue without pain or discomfort.

Prenatal Massage

Prenatal massage is therapeutic bodywork that focuses on the special needs of the mother-to-be as her body goes through the dramatic changes of pregnancy. It enhances the function of muscles and joints, improves circulation, and relieves mental and physical fatigue. At Lotus Massage and Spa we only require you to have had your first prenatal doctors appointment to determine if your pregnancy is high risk and may require additional precautions.

Reflexology

Reflexology is a type of massage that involves applying different amounts of pressure and massage techniques to the feet, hands, and ears. It's based on a theory that these body parts are connected to certain organs and body systems. The idea is that you could essentially receive the benefits of a full body massage by only massaging your hands, feet, and ears, making this a great option for clients who may not be comfortable disrobing for massage.

Craniosacral

Craniosacral massage is a gentle, non-invasive form of bodywork that addresses the bones of the head, spinal column and sacrum. Instead of your typical massage using lotion or oil and long gliding strokes, craniosacral is a series of holds with the goal of releasing compression in those areas which alleviates stress and pain.

Sports Massage

Sports massage is a form of bodywork geared toward participants in athletics. It is used to help prevent injuries, to prepare the body for athletic activity and maintain it in optimal condition, and to help athletes recover from workouts and injuries. It sometimes includes stretching.

Oncology Massage

Oncology massage is a client-specific, customized massage session designed to meet the unique and changing needs of someone in treatment for cancer or with a history of cancer treatment. A safe massage plan generally revolves around the side effects (both short- and long-term) of chemotherapy, radiation and surgery.

Trigger Point Therapy

A trigger point is a tight area within muscle tissue that refers pain to other parts of the body. For example, you may have a trigger point in your back that refers pain to your neck. Trigger Point Therapy can relieve this pain in both areas.

Minor Massage

A Minor Massage is classified as a massage for anyone under the age of 18. For this kind of massage, we require an additional release form to be signed by the parent or guardian, and we require the parent or guardian to be present in the room during the massage. There is no age limit, but we recommend younger children start out with a 30 minute massage session. We can then potentially increase the length of time in subsequent sessions as tolerated.

Modalities: Facilities

Theragun Treatment

The Theragun is a handheld percussion tool that uses different interchangeable tips and speeds to assist in massage, loosening fascia and muscle tissue, easing tension and promoting relaxation throughout the body. It can be performed on your neck, shoulders, back, arms, hands, gluteals, hips, IT bands, quadriceps, hamstrings, calves, and/or feet. It is a 15 to 20 minute treatment, and can be added on to any massage session for only $15.

Kinesio-taping

Kinesio-tape is an elastic cotton strip of therapeutic tape (sometimes also called KT Tape) that is used to help decrease pain, improve performance, and facilitates lymph drainage by lifting the skin over tense, knotted muscles. When the area is decompressed, pain receptors send a new signal to the brain, and tension in the trigger point decreases. It is often used on athletes to provide a light weight, external support to help remain active while recovering from injuries.
